How to Engage in Self-Love (and Actually Feel It Work)

Self-love is an important part of living a happy and healthy life. This doesn't mean that you should spend all day looking in the mirror, however. Self-love is about appreciating who you are as a person, not what you look like. Here are some tips for beating your self-esteem blues, learning to love yourself, and engaging in some self-TLC.

1. Meditation

Many people may think that they’re “too busy” to set aside time and meditate. I’m here to tell you if you feel that way, you’re so wrong! Wake up early and make some time in the morning to do some wake-up meditation and spend a few minutes before bedtime to do some mindfulness meditation and breathwork. This will help you have a clear mind both in the morning and at night and will help the cycle continue when you wake up the following morning, too!

2. Positive Affirmations

“I am” statements are my favorite because let’s face it - the more we tell ourselves something, the more we believe it, right? So, positive affirmations help us literally tell ourselves we’re worth it and place us in a positive mental state. Some of my favorite statements include:

“I am beautiful.”

“I am healthy.”

“I am where I’m supposed to be in life.”
“I am worthy.”

“I am loved by the people in my life.”

Those are just a few to get you going! And, yes, you say these directly to yourself… Whether you close your eyes and lay in bed while doing it, or look yourself in the mirror, there’s no wrong way to do it. Pro tip: I also listen to ASMR for this as well… simple YouTube search “positive affirmations ASMR” to hear someone else tell you these wonderful things!

3. Spend time with family and friends

Spending time alone, even if you’re an introvert at heart, can be depressing and trigger feelings of sadness or loneliness. Therefore, spending time with family and friends can increase your sense of belonging and happiness. Set aside time to see or talk with your family and friends each and every day if possible and make it a regular effort to not isolate yourself. We are social beings and need people!
